Operencia: The Stolen Sun is Live Now!

It’s launch day for Operencia: The Stolen Sun! On behalf of all of us at Zen Studios who have poured our hearts and souls into this first-person dungeon crawler for the last two years, we welcome you to the fantastical world of Operencia!

Operencia launches today exclusively for the Xbox One family of devices, including Xbox One X and Xbox Game Pass, the Epic Games store, and Windows 10. We think you’ll enjoy this revived subgenre of the ‘80s and ‘90s and hope the success of this modernized approach to the old-school “blobber” will inspire other developers to further revitalize such games with their own unique spins.

With Zen being based in Hungary, an added degree of regional pride drives every aspect of this game, and we hope that shines through as our own unique spin. The Central European mythology and folklore that inspired the settings and characters makes Operencia one of a kind in the gaming industry. In development of this game we’ve had the pleasure of delving into the lighthearted folktales, enchanting mythology, and even some legends that are so darkly twisted, you really have to wonder what kind of demented minds dreamed them up – and we’ve seamlessly strung them together to share with you!

Operencia, a world where history meets legend. It’s an odd mix – but a very delightful one! And we can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it.

Operencia: The Stolen Sun releasing March 29 – Get in the mood with our new Story trailer

If you follow Zen Studios social media or our blog, you might be familiar with our newest endeavor – dungeon-crawler RPG Operencia. I’m happy to tell you that you’ll be able to embark on your quest starting March 29 on the Xbox One family of devices, including Xbox One X and Xbox Game Pass and the Epic Games store for PC. If you’d like to see more of the game before release, follow GDC news as we will be showing the game to your favorite gaming sites.

If you’d like to try the game out however, come by the Microsoft booth on PAX East for a hands on demo — and maybe leave with some exclusive swag!

Now that the launch date is set, join Jóska, your completely honest — and in no way untrustworthy — new ally in our Story trailer above. There is a lot you need to know, so let the scoundrel turned reluctant hero fill you in.

The land of Operencia is illuminated by the light of the Sun King, Napkirály — but he’s vanished! And with him, all hope for the future of his subjects. It’s your quest — may we say destiny — to get him back before everything dies and the land falls into darkness. This journey will lead you through places right out of Central European legends, like cursed castles, deep dungeons, and even the seat of Hadúr, the War God — The Copper Forest.

Okay, this might be too much to put only on your shoulders. Don’t worry — you’ll have plenty of companions who will join you to share the burden. Like Sebastian, a veteran warrior willing to do anything for his beliefs — maybe a bit too much if you ask Jóska… You’ll get to know others along the way, such as an actual star walking the world in human-like form, a stonemason plagued by the burdens of her past, or even one of the last members of the táltos order, shamans and witch doctors to Hungarian tribes of old.

And of course, there’s you, the youngest child of a humble farmer, who left the homestead literally following your dreams. Care to lead the way?

Operencia: The Stolen Sun arrives March 29 on the Xbox One family of the devices, with Xbox One X support and part of the Xbox Game Pass. Also to the Epic Games store on PC. We have one about Inspiration, Lore and Art, and one about Puzzles and Combat.

Operencia: The Stolen Sun – Developer Diary | Puzzles and Combat

Greetings from Zen Studios! I am excited to present to you Zen’s second developer diary where you will hear the personal stories from the talented team behind the creation of head-scratching puzzles to the thrilling combat constructed in Operencia: The Stolen Sun.

So, come along with me as I take you behind the scenes of this first-person dungeon crawler and discover what it took to create a couple of the core gameplay mechanics.

Lead Designer Ferenc Nagy-Szakall kicks it off by explaining the four main elements of Operencia, Puzzles and Combat being at its core. Game Designer Andras Klujber reveals a few games – some classic masterpieces for sure – that were used to inspire the unique turn-based combat system found in Operencia. Also, QA Technician Gergely Drobina reveals some challenges the team faced when trying to find the perfect balance of difficulty within the game. Finally, Game Designer/Writer Oliver Sandor shares the irony of how the puzzles he designed to be the simplest, turned out to be the most difficult for others to solve and gives you the inside scoop of who to blame if you find it difficult to conjure up all the potions at the crafting table.

You may have already marked it on your calendar, but we can’t wait for you to experience Operencia: The Stolen Sun coming this Spring to Xbox One, the Epic Games store and Windows 10. Go ahead and leave comments below or reach out to us through social media. Operencia: The Stolen Sun – Developer Diary | Inspiration, Lore and Art.

Hello, RPG fans! As a creative director and writer for Operencia: The Stolen Sun, it’s my pleasure to present to you our first developer diary. In less than six minutes, you’ll gain a solid grasp of what inspired this modernization of the first-person dungeon crawler – everything from centuries-old stories that shaped the world to where the name “Operencia” comes from in the first place.

To start things off, Oliver describes how we came upon the decision to create the game, and mentions some of the core inspiration behind the world – some really cool stuff. And do you know what a Buso is? I didn’t either when I started working on this project, but Tamas is going to introduce you to these fearsome – but somewhat loveable? – antagonists derived from actual history, and he’ll also take us to the beautiful Copper Forest (it’s so metal!). I think my personal favorite part comes near the end, though, when Lali walks us through the process of creating the game’s amazing cutscenes. (Oh…and I’m in this too for a bit, so that’s neat.)

As you probably know by now, Operencia: The Stolen Sun is coming to Xbox One, the Epic Games store and Windows 10 this spring. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the game, and we’re happy to answer any questions we can. Please, leave some comments or reach out to us through social media. We are very proud to share this HUGE piece of news with all of you: Operencia: The Stolen Sun will release exclusively through the Xbox One family of devices, including Xbox One X and Xbox Game Pass and the Epic Games store for PC.

Everyone here at Zen was at the edge of our seats watching Operencia debut to the world at the Kinda Funny Games Showcase in December, and all of us were glad that the reception was very positive from the RPG community. Since then we have put even more work into the game, and did a Closed Beta event to make Operencia even better by incorporating ideas provided by the testers. This dedication to quality caught the eye of our friends at Microsoft and Epic, which quickly led to mutual cooperation that will help us elevate Operencia in a way we would not be able to by ourselves. We really believe the game deserves this, and this is a fantastic opportunity to share the vision of the team with a lot of players.

If you are hearing about the game for the first time, the land of Operencia is an unconventional fantasy world where history meets legend – a faraway land referenced in countless Central European folktales told for hundreds of years. For the first time ever, these stories all occur in the context of one single universe. Adding further depth, real-life historical figures populate the game, such as more legendary versions of King Attila and his wife Réka. You’ll explore a variety of locations from fairytale settings (e.g., castles, tombs and forests) to fantastical versions of storied landmarks anyone can physically visit today.

The talented team behind Operencia: The Stolen Sun has gone to great lengths to ensure that everything in the game feels familiar to RPG players, yet still modern and novel. Through a classic tile-based movement system, you will explore the far reaches of the land, engaging in strategic turn-based battles at every turn. The entire quest to free the abducted Sun King, Napkirály – thereby saving Operencia from endless days of night – comes rife with malevolent monsters, devious traps and mind-bending puzzles. Perhaps even a three-headed dragon…

We have a lot more to show and tell, so please check out our website and social channels to hear more about the game, the world and the team! You can find us on www.OperenciaRPG.com and @OperenciaRPG through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram . Or sign up to our newsletter.
